Lessons From a Trusted Orthodontist in Washington, DC
Smashing Smiles, we want your orthodontic experience to be the best it can possibly be.
Our Washington DC orthodontist works hard to find the treatment that's
best for you, but long-term success will still largely depend upon the
effort you make. The more you take care of your braces, the more they'll
take care of you!
Here are some helpful tips and resources regarding braces:
In order for braces to work as designed, it's crucial for patients
to sufficiently maintain their oral hygiene. This includes both a regular
cleaning program and the avoidance of foods that can compromise the integrity
of your braces—such as nuts or hard candy. Regular cleaning should
include brushing, flossing, interdental brushing, water jetting, and rinsing.
If not cleaned vigilantly, plaque can surround your braces and lead to
swollen gums, bad breath, and cavities.
Life With Braces:
Braces almost always take a bit of getting used to. This is normal. In
the vast majority of cases, the soreness or discomfort you may feel at
the outset the benefits. Eating soft foods for the first day or two can
help. The dietary adjustment—away from sticky, hard, or chewy foods—may
also take some getting used to, but the long-term benefits are well worth
the trouble. By sticking to the program laid out for you by the orthodontist,
you'll get the best possible results with the least amount of discomfort.
Orthodontic emergencies are exceedingly rare. If you should experience
one, you should call your orthodontist right away. An answering service
will handle your call at night or over the weekend. Many minor "emergencies"
can be taken of on your own. Minor emergencies include broken or loose
brackets, lost ligature or "O" ring, loose expander, and much more.
