How Straight Teeth Benefit Oral Health As Well As Your Teen's Smile

Orthodontics is the practice of fixing misaligned teeth. There are several reasons why teenagers might want orthodontic treatment. Overbite, underbite, crossbite, gapped teeth, and crooked teeth are the most common ones. And while it’s no secret straight teeth can drastically improve a smile. Did you know straightening teeth can improve your teen's overall health, too?

Crooked teeth may lead to cavities

Crooked or misaligned teeth are difficult to brush and floss. And if you're not brushing and flossing, you're not practicing excellent oral hygiene. And your whole body can suffer.

Your risk for cavities increases if you can’t remove bacteria or build-up from your teeth. And so does your risk of gum disease. Which can cause bad breath, bleeding gums, and painful chewing. In extreme cases, gum disease can even cause your teeth to fall out.

Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss. Which allows you to effectively clean those hard-to-reach spots. And makes practicing excellent oral hygiene more realistic.

An improper bite can erode enamel

An improper bite, such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, can interfere with the way you chew and speak. This causes abnormal wear to your tooth enamel.

When your enamel erodes, your teeth become exposed and vulnerable to outside influences. They become sensitive to acidic drinks, citrus fruit, and even mouthwash. Teeth without proper enamel result in pain, sensitivity, discoloration, transparency, and cracks.

Misaligned teeth can lead to jaw disorders

Improper bites may also lead to complications with your jaw. Such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). TMJ often causes headaches, trouble chewing, pain in your jaw, and swelling of your face. Medications, bite guards, and physical therapy can treat TMJ. And also ease pain and discomfort. Not to mention, it can make you more confident about your smile.

Straight teeth reduce the risk of tooth decay

Throughout the day, plaque builds up on your teeth. Straight teeth make it easier to rid your mouth of that build-up. Often, the cause for tooth decay is food particles that are stuck in your mouth. Straightening the teeth eliminates that extra space. So food particles don't get stuck.
